Sociocultural Community Development and Social Intervention:
what visions for society?

A symposium organized by the network of French University Departments in Social intervention and Community Work
(Départements Carrières Sociales des IUT de France)

The International Network for Animation (RIA: Réseau International de l'Animation) has organized a series of events since 2003 and this sixth symposium aims to explore how the fields of sociocultural community development and social intervention interact with and shape the communities and the visions of society within which they operate.

Previous events :

- "Animation sociocuturelle in France and its analogies abroad" (Bordeaux, 2003),
- "Citizenship and Democracy: Challenges of sociocultural and social mobilization, participation and intervention" (Sao Paulo, 2005),
- "Sociocultural Community Development : local and global issues"(Lucerne, 2007),
- "Creativity in Sociocultural Community Development (animation): organizational issues, communities and citizens"(Montreal, 2009),
- "Entertainment, Culture and Citizenship: models of socio-educational contexts of change" (Zaragoza, 2011),

The 6th International Symposium is part of an epistemological continuity which considers the socio-cultural and social intervention as social facts and process in permanent construction. As such, it is not, to analyze situations, to be limited to a study of practices but to propose issues based on the articulation of a fourfold paradigm :

- Phenomenological – experience-based ;
- Axiological - value-based;
- Teleological, crystallized from intentions;
- Operational - action-based.

The papers and presentations will address three key themes including sub-themes

1 - Heritage and ruptures, origins and trajectories,

2 - Meanings and purposes: for which types of society?

3 - Boundaries, spaces and territories.
